Chamomile German grows all over Europe and temperate Asia. It was widely introduced in temperate North America and Australia.The branched stem is erect and smooth and grows to a height of 15-60 cm. The long and narrow leaves are bipinnate or tripinnate.
This essential oil has a calming effect on the mind and body and is excellent in treating any type of inflammation - be that internal or external - and is very effective on urinary stones (bladder gravel) as well. It stimulates the liver and gall bladder, thereby improving digestion and is valuable in treating menstrual and menopausal problems.
On the skin, it is a miracle worker and calms red, dry and irritated skin, as well as calming allergies, eczema, psoriasis and all other flaky skin problems.
Derived from the Greek word meaning 'ground apple' it certainly is a plant of many uses. To the Egyptians it was a herb dedicated to the sun to cure fevers and to the moon for its cooling ability.
As it is an emmenagogue, it should most certainly be avoided during pregnancy but as with all essential oils, they should not be used during pregnancy and never ingested (taken internally) and should be kept away from children and pets.
